Bad Tech Habits To Break In 2014

December 26th, 2013 No comments

Thanks to smartphones, cloud technology and social networks, we can take the Internet with us everywhere these days. The down side–we can take the Internet with us everywhere these days.

We are a society tethered to our devices. Apple played on this recently with a tear-jerker of a holiday commercial. But as clever as Apple marketing is–very few teenagers (or any of us for that matter) with faces glued to iPhones use the smartphone to create touching family moments. Most are only texting or surfing the Web.

1) I will stop checking email before bed, right when I wake up and in bed in general.

Has this ever happened to you? Just before turning in, you check your iPhone one final time, only to have a (stressful, annoying, distressing—insert any adjective here) email keep you tossing all night. Or have you checked your phone first thing in the morning, and an email or text fills you with anxiety before you’ve even fully woken up? It happens to us too.

2) I will turn-off all email notifications.

The Microsoft Exchange email alert, the Gmail inbox counter and G-Chat indicator—few things are more distracting than these attention stealers.

Tip: Dig into your settings to switch off the distraction-inducing blips and chimes from detracting from the task at hand. Create a disciplined schedule to check your email once every hour or so–you’ll gain an incredible amount of control over your work day.

3) I will not use my iPhone or Android as a social crutch.

When did if become a requirement to bury your face in a smartphone during every minute you find yourself waiting for a friend at a bar or restaurant? Keep your phone in your pocket, take in the scene and maybe even talk to the person next to you at the bar.

4) I will talk more and text less.

No more refusing to answer calls from friends so you can text them back asking “what’s up?” Same goes for texting happy birthday, happy anniversary, happy new year. While texting is great for logistics, for big, emotional moments and milestones—reach out and touch someone.

5) I will not use my smartphone in the following places:

– in the gym

– in an elevator

– in a crosswalk

– in the checkout line

– in the drivers seat

– in the restroom

6) I will not use hashtags outside of Twitter, and when I do, it will be solely for trending topics (say no to #stopwritingstupidhashtags)

7) I will not check Facebook more than 3 times a day.

Tip: Download Anti-Social–the program will block social networks like Facebook and Twitter but still let you access the rest of the Web.

8) I will not Google facts, dates, actors’ names, or anything else in the presence of other people.

9) I will unsynch my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts because people don’t need to see the same post on three different platforms.

10) I will delete enough email to keep my pile of unread Gmail messages below five-figures–because seeing you have 10,000 unread emails is just plain overwhelming.

11) I will stop writing click-bait, listicle-style Web stories. (But hey, it’s not 2014 yet, so I better get them in while I still can. Happy New Year everyone).

Yahoo.to is mine

July 28th, 2012 No comments

Well I just acquired Yahoo.to domain name. Since DNS is under updation it might take a while for the domain information to propagate to all the servers. As of now the website is not working but it will soon work and the same will be redirected to this page, till the end of my exams.

This website will soon host discussion forum on technology, so stay tuned.

Well lets see, once my exams are over (in mid November) I would rather start working with this domain. I might use it as my own website and put some good stuff in it. I have two year registration for the same so there is lots of time for me decide whats more has to be done.

In case any folks want to grab the ownership, do mail me at [email protected] with an offer I can’t reject.

Update #1: The site is working fine, and it is redirected here now.

Please note that Yahoo.to is a separate website and is not at all related to Yahoo.com or its group websites/companies. I have bought this website for my own purpose. I totally respect the intellectual property of others and therefore this website is not used to copyright infringement or fraudulent activities. If you have any queries feel free to contact me at [email protected]

The keyword that points my blog, “My Arjun Gupta”

September 2nd, 2011 No comments

All those who have a website/blog are usually running some statistical tools in order to identify how their website are performing on the internet. The most used tools are cPanel + Webstat. Well I am also in the same league as I use Hostgators Baby plan which comes with cPanel and all included features.

While I was just checking my website stat (which shows that my blog users are constantly declining 🙁 and spam bot are constantly increasing :0 ), I found few very funny keywords that points out my blog. Apart from keywords like “arjun gupta hates exam”, “Arjun have iPhone 3G”, and many more, the best I found was “My Arjun Gupta”. Well this keyword shows ‘Apnapan’. LOL

Speed up iPhone 3G

August 11th, 2011 No comments

Well I am one of those people who are still keeping the 3 year old technology in their pockets. Probably because we all are waiting for the next iPhone to get launched in the market. Well the next-generation iPhone could be a revolutionary iPhone 5 or evolutionary iPhone 4S (or both), donno and we are not going to discuss about that today. But for the purpose of a mild hint we should expect it to be in the market somewhere around October (still it’s too far).

So our iPhone 3G has to survive till then (which is indeed a tedious job due to its very slow processing capability). You can’t imagine how slow this phone is, means it opens the Message App in 10 sec and even after that sending and receiving SMS is soo slow that I have planned to stop sending/receiving messages to my near ones (forget about other apps, using them is a nightmare for me).

While a vast majority of iPhone users are enjoying the new features and performance improvement in the latest iOS, some iPhone 3G users have reported that iOS 4 has slowed down their iPhone, which has forced some of them to downgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3 (which is feature less for me now).

So after a small search over the internet I found a way to increase the speed of the phone and I am discussing it above.

Here, I would like to introduce a nice and a simple “tweek” that you can use to bump up the speed of your phone.

I started surfing over the internet and found in ModMyI forum that:

Phone 3G apparently has trouble keeping up with indexing, ever since 3.x. Two days ago, I turned off Spotlight search (Settings-General-Home Button-Spotlight search-switch off all you don’t use) because I rarely, if ever, used it.

Up to this day, my poor old 3G with iOS is way snappier than it was before, and I wouldn’t hesitate to say it’s as snappy as with 3.1.3.

So I tried disabling all the spotlight search feature in Settings>General>Home Button>Spotlight search, and now I believe that my phone is little bit faster. Although doing this will stop spotlight from searching any part of your phone but still this tweek make sense to me as I don’t use spotlight at all.

Update: In order to increase your phone’s speed you may also try the following methods:

1) Make sure that your phone have atleast 1GB free space at times, this will help your phone to make full use of the virtual memory.

2) Install SBSettings and stop processes like Safari, iPod and Mail as they run in background and slow your phone.

My system got burned.

This is a century of computers. Nowdays even a smallest possible thing cannot be done without a computer and its a major tool of information today. I was having a laptop that was given by my company to me, but I want something that would belong to me personally. So, I started studying over the internet for things that I should consider while buying a computer system. Well I like buying things that are ultimate and can do anything and everything possible with the same. I do like gaming but its not the only thing that I like doing. My current laptop has a very simple configurations (Core 2 duo + 2GB Ram + the default Intel video card). This laptop was with me for more than a year and I did nothing to benchmark its power, just normal office stuff, that’s it.

Well for quite a while I was not able to check the progress of the technologies that exist now, and being an enthusiast I want a system that works like wow. So I started searching over the internet for a system that can fulfil my needs. First I thought to go for a branded system. In India I think Dell can only be the one that can fulfil my needs. Althought I tried for lenovo and HP also. But even Dell’s highest configs can’t match what I finally brought and apart fromt that it was still very expensive. Finally, I brought a new system with configs as follows:

  1. Processor: Intel Core i7 Sandy Brigde 2600K – Unlocked 3.4Ghz (overclockable to 4.8Ghz)
  2. MotherBoard: ASUS P8P67 Pro – This MotherBoard is meant to overclock processors and run them beyond their capabilities.
  3. RAM: Corsiar 4GB x 2 (eql. 8GB) – 1600 Mhz
  4. Graphic Card: ATI Radeon – HD 6850 – MSI Cyclone OC based, 1GB.
  5. Western Digital 7200rpm – 500GB x 2, over Raid0 Hard Disks.
  6. A very usual CD/DVD combo recorder cum burner from Sony.
  7. Internal WiFi Card.
  8. Cooler Master SMPS – 600watts
  9. Cooler Master Cabinet – 430.
  10. Dell 24 inch Full HD Monitor.
  11. Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and Mouse v2.
  12. Microtek UPS – 1000watts

The things to look above are basically the Processor, MotherBoard and Graphic Card. They are builing block and they are awesome. The Processor is world ranked #11 and #1 in terms of its Architechture. (Intel Nahelam Architechture). The mother board has all latest technologies USB 3.0, SATA @ 6GBps, Graphical BIOS evolution called UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), SLI/crossfire capable, TPU, EPU, MemOK and much more.

But what about the Headline of this post, says something Burned up.

Well this Saturday, suddenly the video went off and I couldn’t guess the reason for the same, so I opened up the cabinet to see what happening inside, everything was looking fine, except the boot light was ‘red’. Apart from that all fans were working fine, I tried switching up the RAMs and at the end the only viable option that I thought was “READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL”. So I started reading it while my computer was On. Just after five minutes the top right part of the MotherBoard (where RAM is placed) started burning. Yes, I am not exaggerating here, it seriously started burning and everything was all smoky. I pulled out the power cable as soon as I saw that. Also tried to pull out things, by that I noticed that the RAM was ‘hot’, very ‘hot’ maybe because the fire took place near it.

Well two good things during this incident were that nothing else (apart from the mother board) was damaged and I had a 3 year warranty with the mother board.

I was shocked, means look at that, bought a damm good computer just 2 weeks ago and it went into flames now. Above all the ASUS customer care  said that they will check the degree of burn and will see if its covered under warranty or I have to pay for it.

Will update on what happens next.

Very near, Very fast

June 12th, 2011 No comments

Well, recently Hostgator.com has expanded itself to join hands and partner with other companies to provide hosting facilities around the world. Very recently they announced the newest HostGator addition; the launch of HostGator India, http://www.hostgator.in!

I am sure that HostGator India will allow all, the opportunity to receive local hosting with servers in India, as well as localized support from their new office in India as well for HostGator India clients! Hostgator’s Indian operations have already started and their Indian office is located in Nashik, Maharashtra. The Indian office works 24×7 and provides technical as well as sales and billing support to all HostGator.in client base.

I have been one of their very first customers and have already got all my sites ported to Hostgator India.

Since day one, I have seen incredible change in the site speed due to very less latency and even my site’s ranking has also spiked up.

I recommend all users who are India based to look forward to this opportunity and use Hostgator India as their web host.

Who may use the coupon “25percentlower” and get additional discount on you hosting plan (for 1year or more).

Remember that you need to pay an additional amount of bucks as service tax @ 10.3%, but since you got a 25% discount coupon code, it’s still worth to get one.

How to Begin Investing in Stock Markets

How to Begin Investing in Stock Markets

I am writing to help those readers who would like to start investing in stocks but need to get all the relevant information at one place and in a simple format, to get started.

To start investing in stocks is really simple; you just have to open two accounts: a demat account and a trading account.  We have given below what these accounts mean and how to open them.

Demat account
————–

Demat is simply short for Dematerialized account. Stocks and shares are stored in a non-physical form in this account. Just as you require a savings account with a bank for storing your money, you would need a Demat account to hold your shares in a dematerialized form.

How to open a Demat account?

You can open a Demat account with any registered depository participant (DP).
To get a list of registered DPs,you may want to visit the NSDL (https://nsdl.co.in/direct_search.php) or CDSL (http://www.cdslindia.com/demat_acct/open_demat.jsp) websites. Once you have chosen your DP, your DP will help you complete the formalities of opening an account. This typically involves the following steps:

->    Filling an account opening form
->    Signing an agreement with the DP, which is meant mainly to protect your interest
->    Submitting supporting documents on the proof of your identity and address.

Trading Account
————–

In order to trade in stocks (i.e. buying and selling) one needs to open a trading account. This is done through a stock broker who is a member of a stock exchange.

How to open a trading account?

Follow these steps to enroll as a client of a broker:
1) Identify a Trading Member: Find out the list of trading members from NSE’s website : http://www.nseindia.com (under the link ‘Members’)
2) Contact the Trading Member: The investor should contact the trading member either over the phone or make a personal visit to the trading member’s office.
3) You have to inform the trading member whether he or she wishes to trade through the internet (if the trading member provides internet trading facility) or directly over the phone.
4) You have to provide the trading member certain simple and standardized details as part of regulatory requirements and sign a Member Constituent agreement. The Member will help you complete these formalities.
5) Trading member will issue you a unique client ID.
6) You can now commence trading.

Exams, examz & exam.

Exam pressure is one of those which has a huge magnitute on all students. We have to face this pressure after every few months. An example of the same is >>>>>me.

Well on 15th May my IPCC group 2 exams were finally over. I just thought wow no more exams now, just fun masti enjoyment but look what happen with me the same day when I reached home. There was an admit card posted by School of Open learning, Delhi University (i.e. The same place from where I am doing B.Comm[H]).
After opening it, I came to know that I have to give another examination, Yes it was for B.Comm only.

And the worst thing was that it was scheduled from 20th May, means Friday of the same week.
It was a very irritating moment for me and I think that I should get use to it.

Well wish me luck for these examinations and lets see what God has sent me in this packet.

Update: Exams are over now and I have cleared my IPCC Group 1. Now I have to prepare to give my final examination which is on nov, 2012. Still for the time being I can say myself “Exams are over Arjun”

A day without SPAM

April 10th, 2011 No comments

Well I am one of those guys who get tons of mails everyday, but the main problem in my case is that I use to get many SPAM mails everyday. Well I thinks most of us have the same problem.
But today a miracle had happen its 11.26pm here and I have not received even a single unsolicited mail yet. And since its about half an hour left for the end of the day, I believe k wont get any more mails now. So I can confidently say that today is the day when I got not even a single spam mail in my inbox or even if I do its either trapped by Gmails spam assassin or has been automatically deleted by my own spam filtering method.
But what I want to share today is that why do we get spam mails and how to avoid it. If I start from scratch spam mail are basically promotional mails that we all receive everyday every-time, one good thought here is why do we get all such stuff? A one liner answer to this is because we all give our mail ids very easily to anyone and anywhere in the Internet and email spamming is considered as best and cheapest method to drive traffic on a website. Be cautious as spam mails contains various tricks like spoofing, phishing and spreading virus on your systems.
Although spamming is now considered as a very poor technique of website marketing (due to the great efforts done by Gmail/Yahoo/MS guys which makes them ineffective) still many folks try the same method to gather audience.
Well all I can say is follow these simple steps to make sure you wont get spammed anymore:
1) Create two email ids, one for handling your personal mails and other for giving it to websites all over the internet. Remember internet is a way good technology and you have to give your email ids for correspondence, separating personal mails and mails used for correspondence/contact purpose is a very nice method for managing your emails and is less irritating. One thing to consider is that every site won’t send you spam mails, only few will do. So don’t think that you should not give your email id to anyone.
2) Always mark spam to mails that are spam rather than just ignoring it, believe me you wont get at-least that kind of mail ever. And this will also block the source.
3) If you have your own domain or if you are planning to get one, make your mail id like [email protected] or [email protected], mails like this do not get even a single spam mail.
4) If you are publishing your email to your blog or any forum do write it like this yourmail [at] gmail [dot] com. This will avoid spam bots from capturing your mail. You may use your own method of writing your email on a forum page by editing the method given above.

And ya do change your password every 2 weeks and make it alphanumeric and add few special symbols to the same.
